AppearanceThe pomegranate plant has smooth, evergreen leaves and showy flowers that are orange or red. The fruit is rounded and has a dry outer covering, or husk, made up of two layers.

FruitThe fruit is yellowish green to reddish in color and contains numerous seeds. The seeds are surrounded by a sweet, edible pulp called an aril and can be white, deep red, or purple in color.

UsesThe fruit, leaves, and roots of the pomegranate are all considered medicinal. The seeds can be eaten fresh or made into juice. Pomegranates are high in antioxidants, phenols, tannins, folate, potassium, and vitamins C and K.

Growing conditionsPomegranates grow best in hot, dry regions and require low watering. They can be grown in the ground or in a pot and need at least 7–8 hours of sunlight per day.

LifespanA pomegranate tree can live for about 35 years.
